These breadsticks bite back. Gauge your tolerance for heat as you decide how much pepper to use.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 to 1-1/2 teaspoons cracked black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup butter
- 2/3 cup beef or chicken broth
- In a medium mixing bowl stir together flour, baking powder, pepper, and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Make a well in the center. Add broth; stir just until dough clings together.
- Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead gently for 10 to 12 strokes. Divide dough into 8 equal portions; divide each portion into fourths. Roll each piece into a 10-inch-long rope. Fold each rope in half; twist 2 or 3 times. Arrange twists on an ungreased baking sheet.
- Bake in a 450 degree F oven for 5 minutes; turn and bake for 5 to 6 minutes more or until brown. Serve warm, or cool completely on a wire rack before serving. Makes 32 breadsticks.
- Wrap cooled breadsticks in foil; freeze up to 1 week. To reheat: bake wrapped breadsticks in 350 degree F oven for 10 minutes or until warm.
